You should really read up on storage redundancy like RAID for storage, RAID SD cards (boot ESXi), RAID 5 for SSDs, RAID 10 for SATA & SAS HDD or at least RAID 1 of you only have 1 pair of SSDs or HDDs.

How much RAM your VMs need depends on their OS and what you are going to run on each VM.Ĥ. The overheads for ESXi is very low.for easy calculation I would reserve like 128MB RAM.which is kinda negligible. VMware ESXi only requires like 141mb to 181mb (for safety maybe 250mb with some spare).so the USB stick needs probably anything like 256MB will do.ģ. So are there twp parts to esxi - the install, and the config? if so, where do you keep the config? is it on the same usb?Ģ. How much ram does esxi need for my purpose?īest practices would be to backup your ESXi configuration to another location in case of a drive failure. The first link seems to recommend 16gb usb, so I'll go with that. Which version esxi? 5? 6? the latest, or 5.5?.

Preferring the second link, it looks like i download the installation image, ,write bootable image to usb, boot up microserver off usb, install esxi to the very usb I've installed from ( thereby wiping the original install). THe plan is to create, say four vms with 32 gb each on the single ssd, and allocate 2gb ram to each, but i assume esxi will need some ram, so maybe one of the vms will have a bit less.

Ive read that installing to a usb is the way forward. It has one 128 gb ssd and two large storage drives. I would like to install esxi in order to run some vm's.

I've just recently come into possession of a gen 8 microserver.
